Micro structures in Bi-based metallic liquid alloys

Ueno, Hiroki; Kawakita, Yukinobu  ; Ohara, Koji*; Tahara, Shuta*; Kohara, Shinji*; Ito, Masayoshi*; Takeda, Shinichi*

Bi-Zn alloy system has a two-melt phase separation region, while Bi-Sn system has a eutectic-type phase diagram. To reveal liquid micro structure, neutron and X-ray diffraction experiments were carried out and structural analysis using RMC method was applied. ND experiments were carried out for liquid Bi$$_{50}$$Zn$$_{50}$$ at HERMES installed in JRR-3M and for liquid Bi$$_{43}$$Sn$$_{57}$$ at SANDALS spectrometer installed in ISIS, UK. XRD experiments with high energy X-ray of 182.6 keV were performed for Bi$$_{x}$$Zn$$_{1-x}$$ ($$x=0.5, 0.8$$) at BL08W beamline in SPring-8. Analysis using RMC revealed that Zn-Zn partial correlations contribute the nearest neighboring distribution and also large fluctuations in medium range in liquid BiZn, while Bi-Bi pair distribution function in eutectic liquid BiSn exhibits substantial temperature variation compared with the other correlations and fluctuations in Bi-Bi bonds grow up on going deep in the eutectic region.
