Single crystal growth and magnetic properties of SmCu$$_2$$Ge$$_2$$

Matsuda, Tatsuma; Tateiwa, Naoyuki   ; Yamamoto, Etsuji  ; Haga, Yoshinori   ; Fisk, Z.

SmCu$$_2$$Ge$$_2$$ is crystallized ThCr$$_2$$Si$$_2$$-type tetragonal structure. According to a previous report of the lattice parameter, the sequence of volume on RCu$$_2$$Ge$$_2$$ (R: rare earth) seems to be smoothly changed even at Sm atom. This fact indicates that the valence of Sm would be $$3+$$ and a magnetic ground state can be expected. Recently, we succeeded to grow a high quality single crystal of RCu$$_2$$Ge$$_2$$ by Sn-flux method. The susceptibility shows a clear cusp around 15 K which corresponds to a antiferromagnetic ordering. In order to clarify the f electrons state in SmCu$$_2$$Ge$$_2$$, we measured the detail of magnetic anisotropy and performed the CEF analyses by using those magnetic properties.
