Denitration of a highly-concentrated sodium nitrate (NaNO$$_{3}$$) aqueous solution was studied with a catalytic reduction method using a catalyst of palladium-copper supported on carbon powder (Pd-Cu/C) and hydrazine (N$$_{2}$$H$$_{4}$$). It was demonstrated that nitrate ion (NO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$) in 5 mol L$$^{-1}$$ NaNO$$_{3}$$ solution was completely reduced through an intermediate nitrite ion (NO$$_{2}$$$$^{-}$$) to a nitrogen compound such as nitrogen, nitrous oxide or ammonia. By comparing reaction rates of NO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ and NO$$_{2}$$$$^{-}$$ obtained using catalysts with various Pd-Cu composition and different reductants (hydrogen (H$$_{2}$$) or N$$_{2}$$H$$_{4}$$), it was found that the catalyst having metal ratio of Pd : Cu = 1 : 0.66 brought maximum reaction rate of NO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ and NO$$_{2}$$$$^{-}$$ by using N$$_{2}$$H$$_{4}$$, and that not only reactions of NO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ and NO$$_{2}$$$$^{-}$$ but also reaction of N$$_{2}$$H$$_{4}$$ were affected by the Pd-Cu composition.
