In the Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities (EVEDA) of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF), thickness variation of the IFMIF lithium target is planned to be measured with a contact-type liquid level sensor in the EVEDA Li Test Loop. This sensor can detect contacts between a probe and Li surface, in other words, the probe may perturb the free surface. Thus, a resistance-reduced probe is required. Resistance from the flow can be divided to friction resistance, wave resistance, and viscous pressure resistance. As a first step, we calculated viscous pressure resistance with a commercial CFD code, FLUENT. The probe models employed were a needle-type shape and a streamline shape. Calculated coefficients of viscous pressure resistance were 1.64 and 0.64 for the needle-type shape and the streamline shape, respectively. Therefore, it was found that even in the free-surface flow, a streamline shape has low viscous pressure resistance.
