Design of an experimental method for measurement of isotopic fragmentation cross-section energy dependence of nucleus-nucleus collisions

We develop a combination of TOF and $$Delta$$E-E method, by which the isotopic fragmentation reaction cross-sections can be obtained as excitation functions in one heavy ion irradiation experiment. The basics of the method is to measure velocity, dE/dx and kinetic energy of projectile fragments originated in a thick target bombarded by mono-energetic heavy ions. Charge, mass and energy of the projectile fragments are measured with a scintillator telescope consisting of a thin plastic scintillators, another plastic scintillator and a thick BGO detector serving as a TOF start detector, a TOF end detector doubling with $$Delta$$E detector and a total E detector, respectively. By converting the TOF spectrum for each isotope, isotopic excitation functions are obtained. This method was tested against the simulation with FLUKA code for 400 MeV/u O bombardment on a carbon target. The result shows excitation functions for Li, Be, B, C and N production are successfully obtained above 50-100 MeV/u.
