An Implementation of parallel two-dimensional FFT in a local gyrokinetic Vlasov simulation code

To address multi-scale turbulence simulations with high-resolutions in directions perpendicular to magnetic fields, it is necessary to parallelize perpendicular dynamics, which is solved by the spectral method with fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms in the GKV code. We have reported overlap methods of computations and communications for parallel 2D FFTs, and its impact on the computational costs. The results demonstrate that the integrated overlaps significantly improve strong scaling of the nonlinear E$$times$$B term calculation in the GKV code. The newly-developed overlap methods are applicable if one finds independent multi-dimensional FFTs, e. g., fluid simulations including some unknowns like density, velocity and temperature.
