Temperature dependence of gas evolution from polyolefins on irradiation under vacuum

Seguchi, Tadao*; Haruyama, Yasuyuki; Sugimoto, Masaki

The yields of gas evolution from various types of polyethylene and ethylene-propylene copolymer by radiation were precisely measured after $$gamma$$ ray irradiation under vacuum at the wide range of temperatures (-196 $$sim$$ 200$$^{circ}$$C). For all polymers the major gas was H$$_{2}$$ and the minor products were C$$_{1}$$, C$$_{2}$$, C$$_{3}$$ hydrocarbons and oxidation compounds as CO$$_{2}$$ and CO. The total gas yield increased with the increase of irradiation temperature. The yield of total gas increased with irradiation temperature, and the behavior was closely related to the molecular motion of polymer matrix during irradiation.
