Chrysanthemum is one of the most important ornamentals in Malaysia for both local and international market. In this project, mutagenesis of chrysanthemum was carried out using a combination of ion beam irradiation and in vitro organ cultures to produce new cultivars with novel traits and wider mutation spectrum. From a series of morphological screenings, 5 stable mutants have been identified with distinct flower characters such as purplish red, long and slender ray floret, and red, spatulate shape. All these mutants were derived from irradiated ray floret cultures and will be registered as new varieties with Department of Agriculture Malaysia.
