Study on charge exchange gases in tandem accelerators for cluster ion acceleration

Saito, Yuichi; Chiba, Atsuya; Yamada, Keisuke; Narumi, Kazumasa

Charge exchange cross section $$sigma$$$$_{p}$$ and destruction cross section $$sigma$$$$_{d}$$ for cluster ions (C$$_{n}$$: n=2, 4, 8, 10) colliding with gas targets (He, Ne, N$$_{2}$$, Xe) in MeV energy were measured to select a suitable charge exchange gas for tandem accelerators. It was revealed that each $$sigma$$$$_{d}$$ for C$$_{n}$$ was proportional to the number of atoms in a cluster ion and dependent on the atomic size of the gas. Furthermore, the destruction cross section $$sigma$$$$_{d}$$ for each C$$_{n}$$ against helium gas is the smallest among those of the gas targets, whereas the charge exchange cross section $$sigma$$$$_{p}$$ does not seem to be significantly dependent on the cluster size and the atomic size of the gas. The helium gas should be suitable for cluster ion acceleration, because a charge exchange gas should have a smaller $$sigma$$$$_{d}$$ and a larger $$sigma$$$$_{p}$$.
