Neutron diffraction on LPSO structure in Mg-Zn-Y alloys

Gong, W.; Aizawa, Kazuya  ; Harjo, S.   ; Abe, Jun; Iwahashi, Takaaki; Kamiyama, Takashi*

A new series magnesium alloys with the microstructure consisted of HCP-Mg and LPSO (Long-period stacking ordered structure) phase, which exhibit good mechanical properties, have attracted great attention. To clarity the morphology and crystal structure of the LPSO phase is the key point to understand the strengthening mechanisms in these new magnesium alloys. Neutron diffraction experiments were performed by beam line 19 TAKUMI at Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) to investigate the bulky average crystal information like phase fraction, lattice parameter, texture, etc. in Mg-Zn-Y alloys.
