Fast observation of hydrogenation reaction of Pd nanoparticles by real-time-resolved X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy

Nanoparticles of Pd show different hydrogen absorption properties from bulk Pd. We have observed the X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectra with dispersive optics in order to understand the size effect of the Pd nanoparticles concerning the hydrogen storage process. Shortening of the oscillation wavelength was observed, which indicates that Pd-Pd interatomic distance was expanded due to the hydrogen absorption reaction. The expansion of the Pd particles is completed in 10 ms at the hydrogen pressure of 660 kPa.
