Incorporation of the statistical multi-fragmentation model in PHITS and its application for simulation of fragmentation by heavy ions and protons

Ogawa, Tatsuhiko   ; Sato, Tatsuhiko   ; Hashimoto, Shintaro  ; Niita, Koji*

The fragmentation cross-sections of relativistic energy nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions were analyzed using the Statistical Multi-fragmentation Model (SMM) incorporated with the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS). The fragmentation cross-sections simulated by PHITS-SMM and PHITS were compared with the literature data. For heavy-ion-induced reactions, the simulation by PHITS-SMM predicted fragmentation cross-sections up to two orders of magnitude more accurate than PHITS. For proton-induced reactions, noticeable improvements were observed for both heavy and medium-mass target. Therefore, implementation of a multi-fragmentation model is a robust way to accurately predict fragmentation cross-sections at intermediate energies.
