Experimental study on the Bunsen reaction using an ionic liquid in thermochemical iodine-sulfur process for hydrogen production

Ohashi, Hirofumi ; Imai, Yoshiyuki

The feasibility of the Bunsen reaction using ionic liquid containing iodine ion was experimentally examined to improve the thermal efficiency of the hydrogen production using the thermochemical water-splitting iodine-sulfur process by increasing of the hydrogen iodide concentration in the Bunsen reaction. The hydrogen iodide concentration in the hydriodic acid obtained by the Bunsen reaction using The 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Iodide ([bimi][I]) was measured at room temperature, ambient pressure and reactant composition of ionic liquid : I$$_{2}$$ : H$$_{2}$$O = 0.25$$sim$$0.5 : 0.51$$sim$$2.1 : 1.0 (molar ratio). The maximum hydrogen iodide concentration was 24.5 mol% (= 69.8wt%), which was higher than that obtained by the conventional Bunsen reaction. The feasibility of the Bunsen reaction using ionic liquid was confirmed in terms of the increasing the hydrogen iodide concentration in the Bunsen reaction.
