A phase bunching effect in the central region of the JAEA AVF cyclotron has been investigated to obtain a narrow beam phase width necessary for extraction of a low energy spread beam. Simulation of a beam trajectory in the central region indicated that phase bunching was generated for the acceleration harmonic number (${it h}$) 2 and 3. The beam phase distribution of a 260 MeV $$^{20}$$Ne$$^{7+}$$ (${it h}$ = 2) beam in the cyclotron was measured in order to experimentally confirm the phase bunching effect. As a result, reduction of the phase distributions from $$pm$$18.9 to $$pm$$4 RF degrees was observed as consistent with the calculation results.
