World nuclear energy strategies from the viewpoint of environment and sustainability

Ono, Kiyoshi ; Ohtaki, Akira ; Mukaida, Kyoko  ; Shiotani, Hiroki; Hirata, Masaru

The purpose of this study is to explore the potential for a worldwide deployment of sustainable nuclear energy by reference to analyses in IAEA's INPRO/SYNERGIES project. The results from the evaluation of the homogeneous model and the heterogeneous model show LWR plutonium recycling scenario and FR scenario are effective in reducing natural uranium demand and high-level radioactive waste generation compared with the LWR once through scenario. This study concludes that LWR plutonium recycling scenario and FR scenario will contribute to achieving global sustainable nuclear energy systems.
