Molecular dynamics simulation of the three-dimensional ordered state in laser-cooled heavy-ion beams

Yuri, Yosuke

A three-dimensional (3D) ordered state of an ion beam was formed using laser cooling on the basis of a molecular dynamics simulation for the first time. As the results, the followings were obtained: A 40-keV Mg$$^+$$ ion beam was strongly cooled with horizontally-displaced Gaussian lasers and resonant coupling in a cooler storage ring. The 3D ordered structure in the laser-cooled ultralow-temperature beam was attained depending on laser-cooling conditions, such as the displacement of the laser axis. The ordered beam rotated around the central beam axis, unlike a crystalline beam.
