Synchrotron X-ray diffraction techniques for in situ measurement on hydride formation under several gigapascals of hydrogen pressure

Saito, Hiroyuki; Machida, Akihiko; Aoki, Katsutoshi

This review covers high-pressure study of hydrogenation process and synthesis of hydrides using a cubic-type multi-anvil apparatus; experimental details of hydrogenation cell assembly, high temperature and high pressure generation and in situ observation technique are presented. Two successful cases of the high pressure hydrogenation are presented; aluminum hydride AlH$$_{3}$$ and aluminum-based alloy hydride Al$$_{2}$$CuH$$_{x}$$ which are potential candidates for hydrogen storage materials.
