An Approach to assess radiation doses to the people living in areas contaminated by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident with consideration about variability of lifestyle habits

After the Tohoku District-off the Pacific Ocean Earthquake, large tsunamis struck the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which led to a nuclear accident that caused release of a large amount of radioactive materials into the environment. Many residents are being exposed to radiation in daily lives as of today. To manage exposures to the populations appropriately, an urgent issue is development of a method to assess radiation doses. In this study, we aim to develop a probabilistic method to assess the dose distribution from external exposures to the populations taking into account variabilities of time use daily data. To achieve this aim, surveys on behavioral pattern were performed with the cooperation of various population groups, and statistical analyses have been performed for the data to determine distribution forms. In addition, individual doses due to external exposures were measured with personal dosimeters, and the validity of the assessment was confirmed.
