Mechanisms of deuterium retention and carbon accumulation in a tungsten coating layer irradiated by mixed deuterium and carbon ion beam has been discussed based on depth profiles of deuterium and carbon atoms in the tungsten coating layer. Elevation of the surface temperature enhances migration of carbon atoms in the tungsten coating layer and leads to increase in the carbon accumulation. The accumulated carbon retains the injected deuterium atoms and increases deuterium retention. It is found from a comparison of the deuterium retention evaluated by the deuterium depth profiles and the deuterium desorption that the retained deuterium predominantly desorbs in the form of hydrocarbons. This desorption eliminates the carbon atoms accumulated in the tungsten coating layer.
