JAEA and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation have fabricated an insert, which is a test coil to evaluate superconducting performance of ITER CS conductor. The insert is a 9-turn single layer solenoid coil with a 1.5-m diameter and will be tested at 13T and 40 kA using the CSMC test facility in JAEA. Major fabrication processes are winding, terminal fabrication, heat treatment, insulation and structure assembly. These procedures were demonstrated before start of each fabrication process. Winding tools were able to form the coil within the geometrical criteria using a dummy conductor with the same length as the insert. A terminal sample was fabricated and its destructive examination showed good bonding between the cable and the sleeve. Prepreg taps were wound for turn insulation and ground insulation was performed using VPI technique. These insulation processes were demonstrated using the dummy winding. The results of demonstration and fabrication of the insert will be reported in the paper.
