Micro/nanofabrication of medical plastics using focused ion beam

Oyama, Tomoko

Development of medical-/bio-devices requires both micro/nanofabrication technique and functionalization technique (such as controlled cell adhesion) of biocompatible materials. The both techniques can be realized by quantum-beam technologies. We evaluated micro/nanofabrication of a medical plastic, poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), using focused ion beam direct etching. Controlled micro/nanostructures of PLLA were fabricated with C=C bond-rich surfaces by controlling the irradiation and sample conditions.
