In the near-field of a geological disposal system for high-level radioactive waste repository, it is anticipated that the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical and chemical (THMC) processes will occur, involving an interactive process with radioactive decay heat arising from the vitrified waste, infiltration of groundwater from the host rock into the buffer material, swelling pressure of buffer material due to its saturation and chemical reaction of porewater between groundwater and buffer material. In order to validate the newly developed THMC model and to confirm the engineering technology, the in-situ experimental studies on engineered barriers system (EBS) have been planned with a simulated full-scale EBS at 350m level gallery in Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (URL), Japan. This describes the current status and future plan for EBS experiment including the site features of the Horonobe URL.
