J-KAREN is a state-of-the-art high-power laser with hybrid OPCPA / Ti:Sapphire, double CPA architecture. Due to high temporal and spatial beam quality, the on-target intensity exceeds $$10^{21}$$ W/cm$$^2$$ with an $$f/2$$ focusing. The temporal contrast is high enough for shooting $$1mu m$$ foils without plasma mirrors. These allowed us to demonstrate proton acceleration up to energies exceeding 40 MeV and Al ion acceleration up to 320 MeV (12 MeV/nucleon). We present the current laser performance, recent experimental achievements, and the upgrade plan to achieve the on-target peak power of 1 PW and repetition rate of 0.1 Hz.
