The high field sciences, which is typically phenomena excited by intense lasers, are considered. Such interesting fields are rapidly growing due advances in laser technology. In our institute we are upgrading the Ti:sapphire laser system to $$sim$$ 1 petawatt including experimental system. We aim to achieve a focused intensity of 10$$^{22}$$ W/cm$$^2$$. Two pilot experiments, generation of $$>$$ 100 MeV protons and 1 keV coherent X-rays, are planned to demonstrate the usable, total performance of our new J-KAREN-P experimental system. Other possible experiments such as flying mirrors and $$gamma$$ ray flash are also discussed. In addition, we present the current status of the upgrade as well as future prospects.
