In order to explore high field sciences a PW-class, 30-fs, 810-nm laser is being prepared at the Kansai Photon Research Institute, Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Our laser system named J-KAREN-P is based on the previous J-KAREN, which had a high contrast ratio of 10$$^{11}$$. Our challenge is to achieve the focused intensity of 10$$^{22}$$ W/cm$$^2$$ on targets to explore intensity-frontier in laser matter interaction. In order to achieve this high intensity, we have paid special attention to choosing and mounting optical components. Two deformable mirrors will be used. In addition, the precise alignment of gratings in a pulse compressor becomes important in a large beam diameter of 250 mm. The present status of the upgrade will be given as well as the perspective on high field sciences such as high-energy ion generation, coherent X-ray generation, radiation pressure dominant acceleration, etc.
