JAEA successfully completed manufacture of Toroidal Field (TF) Insert Coil (TFIC) for a performance test of the ITER TF conductor in the final design in cooperation with Hitachi, Ltd. The TFIC is a single layer 8.875-turn solenoid coil with 1.44 m diameter. This will be tested with 68 kA current application under 13 T external magnetic field. Since the TF conductor performance, which includes 900 Nb
Sn superconducting strands, is sensitive for temperature at its heat treatment (HT) and bending strain after HT, the manufacturing processes for the TFIC including HT and shaping were developed through trials. Eventually the temperature at HT and bending strain at shaping were controlled within the allowable margin of 5
C and 0.1%, respectively. The validation of the HT was confirmed by critical current measurements of Nb
Sn strand samples co-heat-treated with the TFIC. In this presentation details of manufacturing process and quality control status for the TFIC are reported.
