Non-destructive assay for nuclear materials using $$gamma$$-ray induced nuclear excitation

Hayakawa, Takehito

We propose a new nondestructive assay method for fissionable isotopes as U-235, Pu-239, and other minor actinides in spent nuclear fuel. In our proposed system a key isotope is measured using nuclear resonance fluorescence (NRF) with a monochromatic $$gamma$$-ray beam. Such a $$gamma$$-ray beam is generated by Compton scattering of electrons and laser photons. One of two measurement techniques in this method is measuring the scattering $$gamma$$-rays from a target after NRF. Another is to measure absorption of the incident $$gamma$$-ray beam. We present our progress for this method.
