New decontamination technique for soil wastes based on the fundamental elucidation of Cs adsorption mechanism on clay minerals

Yaita, Tsuyoshi

This study aiming at the development and optimization of volume reduction method for huge amount of radioactive soil wastes, the cesium sorption and desorption mechanism on clay mineral was studied. In Fukushima prefecture, it is found that the weathered biotite, WB, plays an important roll of radioactive cesium adsorption through the imaging prate and electron microscopic analysis. In this presentation, the modified the wet-classification, chemical treatment and high temperature alkaline treatment updated based on the adsorption mechanism will be mentioned. The synchrotron based EXAFS, DXAFS and STXM methods demonstrated that radioactive Cs adsorbed on the weathered biotite and stabilized within several ten seconds after dehydration process, and also the chemical bond properties between cesium and WB presents the covalent nature in addition to ionic interaction. In this presentation, we will also introduce the developed and modified decontamination methods for soil wastes.
