Effect of the oxidizing ion on breakdown potential behavior of zirconium in boiling nitric acid solution

Ishijima, Yasuhiro ; Ueno, Fumiyoshi

Zr has susceptibility of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in boiling nitric acid solution under trans-passive conditions. However, it is not clear that the influence of the nitrate concentration and pH on de-passivation behavior for zirconium. In this study, the anodic polarization measurements that controlled pH and nitrate concentrations were carried out. We found that the nitric acid concentration dependency on trans-passive behavior of Zr was specific phenomenon in nitric acid.
