Metal nanoparticles have been widely used as heterogeneous catalysts because of their large specific surface area. However, they are also expected to show peculiar performance originated in the nanometer scale, which is sensitive to the change of atmosphere and temperature. We have developed the combination observation system of temperature-programmed reaction (TPR) which shows performance of nanoparticles and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) which has element selectivity. The TPR-XAFS technique was applied for water formation reaction on Pt metal nanoparticle catalysts. We have demonstrated that the feature of TPR-XAFS technique for understanding surface chemistry.
