Ferromagnetism in intermetallic uranium compounds URh$$_6$$X$$_4$$ (X = Si, Ge)

We report ferromagnetic uranium compounds URh$$_6$$X$$_4$$ (X = Si, Ge) with the hexagonal LiPd$$_6$$P$$_4$$-type. Both compounds order ferromagnetically at low temperature. Despite the large difference in the unit cell volume between URh$$_6$$Si$$_4$$ and URh$$_6$$Ge$$_4$$, magnetic properties are surprisingly similar, indicating a relatively weak chemical pressure effect. Preparation of isostructural thorium compound was successful only for X = Ge. For X = Si, however, LiPd$$_6$$P$$_4$$-type structure seems to be unstable, yielding a structural modulation keeping the very similar local atomic arrangements.
