Observation of OH radicals in liquid water by quantum beats

Hirade, Tetsuya

Reaction of radiation-induced OH radicals in water is important for radiation effects in living organisms and in nuclear reactors. It is considered that the OH radical forms a complex with water molecules. The hyperfine coupling constants of the states of the OH radical with and without one water molecule in gas phase were obtained by supersonic jet. The hyperfine coupling constant of the OH radical changes largely by forming the complex. The Detection of the complex showing the hyperfine coupling constant of 155.3 MHz in liquid water was tried and successfully measured the state showing a well-matched value. Quantum beats showing the hyperfine coupling constant of OH radicals alone, 73.25 MHz, showed the possibility of varying in value due to the influence of surrounding water molecules in water.
