Activities of neutron resonance absorption imaging in J-PARC

Neutron resonance absorption imaging is a technique to visualize spatial distributions of specific elements in a sample. A neutron cross section rapidly increases at resonance energies specified by a target element. The resonance peaks in the cross section are measured as sharp dips in an energy-dependent neutron transmission rate of a sample. In an imaging measurement the transmission rate at each position is measured by a two-dimensional time-analyzing neutron detector, and a transmission image enhancing a specific element is obtained at its resonance energies determined by the flight time of neutron. It is also possible to visualize a distribution of temperature of an element by analyzing the sharp dips broadened by the Doppler effect caused by thermal vibration of the element. In this presentation, research activities using the neutron resonance absorption imaging technique performed in NOBORU and RADEN are introduced.
