The Mechanism of B$$_{4}$$C granules decomposition during 1F control blade degradation test revealed by Raman spectroscopy

Pshenichnikov, A. ; Nagae, Yuji ; Kurata, Masaki

Not sufficiently investigated role of B$$_{4}$$C in BWR assembly degradation challenges success of Fukushima Dai-Ichi (1F) decommissioning. The control blade degradation under Unit 2 and Unit 3 conditions of 1F is unclear because understanding of high-temperature B$$_{4}$$C interaction with BWR assembly materials with formation of new phases is still lacking. Using Raman spectroscopy of debris of control blade degradation tests it was established that B$$_{4}$$C degradation happens through graphitization both under steam-starved and full steam conditions.
