Nuclear science and technology and its medical application

Endo, Akira

Diagnosis and treatment of diseases using radiations and radiopharmaceuticals are indispensable in medicine. Radiology is supported by fundamental technologies developed in the field of nuclear science and technology, such as radiation transport technique to simulate the behavior of radiations in matter, nuclear decay data for properties of radionuclides, and modeling technique of the human body used for diagnosis and treatment. The present lecture overviews the current status of research and development at JAEA focusing on medical application, and indicates the importance of collaboration between radiology and nuclear science and technology for future innovations in the medical field.
