The prototype fast breeder reactor "Monju" is a sodium-cooled fast neutron reactor with an electric power of 300 MW developed in Japan. The reactor is a loop-type reactor with three sodium cooling systems and the reactor core consists of 198 fuel subassemblies each containing 169 pins with mixed oxide fuel. This chapter summarizes outline and features of Monju: design, R&D activities and technology development to establish the design, construction, experience in operation and maintenance, and technological achievements obtained in the operation.
