Nuclear science research activities in BL-27

Many XAFS experiments using nuclear fuel and radioisotope materials and fundamental nuclear researches have been carried out at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK), the Photon Factory, BL-27 station. In this presentation, we introduce three representative examples of these studies: research on simulated nuclear waste glass, research on the characterization of simulated uranium debris, and research on irradiation effects on nuclear power plant pressure vessel steel. The simulated nuclear waste glass is multi-component material, and the use of synchrotron radiation XAFS is effective. In the study of simulated debris, XAFS data of many uranium mixed oxides have been accumulated. In the study of irradiation effects on pressure vessel steels, analyses of neutron irradiated material (unsealed RI) have been carried out.
