Characterization of waste at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station; Experience and prospect

Koma, Yoshikazu

Accident of three reactors of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in March 2011 was accompanied by hydrogen explosion, and caused wide spread radioactive contamination. Radioactive waste has been generated due to ongoing fuel retrieval and decommissioning. Characterizing waste is essential to explore options of waste disposal including Waste Acceptance Criteria, and contamination is studied by radiochemical analysis of DTM nuclides. Inventory estimation method was developed based on radiochemical data and Bayesian statistics to reproduce contamination with its uncertainty. Characterization methodologies will compose of analysis planning, analysis procedure, database, inventory estimation as a result of further development with help of international experience and knowledge.
