In Japan, managing radioactive waste from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station has become a national priority. A key concern is secondary waste, such as slurry and sludge, produced during radioactive water treatment in the cooling and injection systems. This waste, with its high water content, poses risks of radioactive releases and hydrogen gas generation. However, safe disposal methods for secondary waste remain unestablished. Cement solidification, a common treatment method, involves extensive testing with various material mixtures to find optimal results. The purpose of developing a method to screen secondary wastes for suitability for cement solidification is to reduce worker exposure and the amount of waste generated from testing. This study also establishes clear criteria for measuring heat release during the process, supported by thermal imaging for screening.
