In JAEA, we have installed and developed a Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy (STXM) apparatus as an analytical method for radioactive materials to assist in the decommissioning work of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The STXM apparatus is located at the soft X-ray beamline BL23SU in SPring-8 RI Laboratory, which allows the use of soft X-rays with photon energies ranging from 400 to 1900 eV. The beamline is particularly suitable for researches on nuclear materials including nuclear fuels, as it can utilize the absorption edges of uranium $$N_{4,5}$$ (730-780 eV) in addition to those of 3$$d$$/4$$d$$ transition metals and 4$$f$$ rare earths. In this presentation, we will first introduce an overview of the STXM apparatus and the fabrication of a dedicated cell for measuring RIs. Then we will present the results of the STXM measurements of Fe-U-Zr-O thin films as an example of actual experiments using this cell.
