When evaluating the distribution of
Cs and
Cs (radiocesium) accumulated in dam lakes and ponds, it is necessary to collect bottom sediment samples, but sample preparation and radioactivity measurement are time-consuming and the evaluation of the distribution over a wide area is complicated. In this study, an in-situ measurement method was developed for rapid assessment of radiocesium distribution at the bottom of water. Conventional sampling and radioactivity measurement of bottom sediment samples took about 20 days to assess the radiocesium inventory in 30 bottom sediment samples in a dam lake. In-situ measurements by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) completed the evaluation in four days, enabling a rapid assessment of the radiocesium inventory distribution over a wide area. The PSF made it possible to quickly measure the entire reservoir comprehensively and to quickly identify areas with high radiocesium concentrations that require dredging.
