Remote in-situ detection of alpha and beta emitters inside the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Unit 3 reactor building using phoswich and Cherenkov detectors

Terasaka, Yuta   ; Sato, Yuki  ; Morishita, Yuki   ; Ichiba, Yuta*

A remote radiation detection system was developed by combining a phoswich detector for alpha/beta discrimination and a Cherenkov detector designed to selectively respond to high-energy beta particles from $$^{90}$$Sr/$$^{90}$$Y. The system was mounted on a cart connected to a mecanum-wheel robot and deployed inside the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Unit 3 reactor building. Both alpha and beta measurements were conducted at multiple locations. The obtained data suggest the potential detection of $$^{90}$$Sr/$$^{90}$$Y under high gamma background conditions. Integration of the radiation data with 3D point cloud models acquired by LiDAR is also in progress, aiming to enable spatial visualization of alpha and beta contamination inside the reactor building.
