Assessment of iodine gas decontamination in sodium pool for advanced reactors

Kam, D. H.*; Grabaskas, D.*; Okano, Yasushi; Uchibori, Akihiro ; Starkus, T.*

In sodium-cooled fast reactors, iodine gas may be retained during bubble transport through the sodium pool. Data was collected from past experimentation and used for model validation, and considered for validation includes various parametric conditions regarding the sodium pool and injected gas mixture. According to the assessment, the approach with bubble sizes from past experimentation leads to underestimates of iodine removal. The predictability of iodine removal is improved in sodium-cooled fast reactors, which supports the impact of small-sized bubbles that promotes a mass transfer through the enlarged surface area.
