Advanced activation analysis in PHITS enabled by JENDL-5 activation cross-section data

Hashimoto, Shintaro  ; Sato, Tatsuhiko   ; Iwamoto, Nobuyuki

Accurate estimation of radioisotope (RI) production is essential for accelerator-based RI production and activation assessments in radiation facilities. By combining the particle and heavy ion transport code system PHITS with the induced-radioactivity calculation code DCHAIN, RI production during beam irradiation and its temporal evolution can be analyzed; however, estimates based solely on nuclear reaction models in PHITS have limited reliability. To improve accuracy, activation cross-section data from the evaluated nuclear data library JENDL-5 were incorporated into PHITS. These data, based on experimental measurements and theoretical calculations, cover reactions induced by neutrons, protons, and deuterons up to 200 MeV, alpha particles up to 15 MeV, and photons up to 140 MeV (up to 200 MeV for some reactions). In this presentation, the calculation method and its application to RI production studies are presented.
