This paper studies the necessity of taking the effect of buckling on pipe endurance into account in the unstable fracture assessment procedure used in the leak-before-break (LBB) assessment. In the LBB assessment for SFR components, the effect of buckling which occurs prior to plastic collapse on the ultimate fracture strength has not been investigated. Nakamura et al. conducted four-point bending fracture tests on thin-walled stainless steel pipes with a circumferential through-crack. Based on the observations, they concluded that although buckling deformation was observed, the influence of buckling on the fracture strength was not significant. Nakamura et al. also pointed out that in thin-walled pipes with a smaller crack, buckling may potentially affect the fracture strength. Thus, the authors performed a series of large deformation finite element analyses and clarified the effect of a circumferential crack on the buckling strength based on the FEA results. Finally, it is clarified that it is not required to take the limitation of buckling into account in the fracture assessment in the ASME LBB assessment procedures.
