In the early phase of a nuclear reactor severe accident (SA), it is well known that control rods tend to melt first ahead of other core components, and understanding this behavior is essential for assessing accident progression beyond the initial SA phase. In this report, to confirm the applicability of JUPITER - developed by JAEA to mechanistically predict core melt behavior under SA conditions - to the analysis of control-rod melting behavior, we conducted an analysis of control-rod melting behavior tests performed using the LEISAN experimental facility. The results showed that oxidation and eutectic models can generally reproduce the observed modes of control-blade failure depending on whether steam oxidation occurs on the surface of the control-rod blade. These findings indicate that JUPITER is likely applicable to control-rod melting behavior in the early phase of an SA.
