The fuel debris samples removed from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station are multi-component, multi-phase systems consisting of elements that make up fuel, cladding, and structural materials. It has been considered that typical fuel debris exhibits variations in composition and crystalline phase on the order of a few micrometers. To understand the properties of such samples, we have been using synchrotron radiation microbeams to apply X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to the sample [1]. This measurement system was experimentally used on simulated fuel debris samples, and after confirming its effectiveness, it was applied to actual fuel debris samples in the SPring-8 of Japan. By making full use of these synchrotron radiation analysis techniques, we aim to analyze the properties of the fuel debris and contribute to decommissioning work such as the investigation of retrieval, containing and storage, and subsequent processing and disposal, etc. of it.
