Double-notch specimens with various notch separation distances were coated with photo-plastic film. Arbitrary combined axial tensile and bending loads were applied to the specimens. Changes in the photo-plastic fringe pattern were observed during the tests to investigate the plastic collapse behavior. The plastic collapse strength was evaluated using a model based on an elastic-perfectly plastic body. The photo-plastic fringe patterns at the experimental plastic collapse point differed based on the loading history. Thus, the plastic collapse behavior depends on the loading history. In addition, the plastic collapse strength differed based on the loading history and hardly depended on the notch separation distance. The experimental plastic collapse occurred before reaching the theoretical plastic point for only some pure-tension loading tests. Thus, the model analysis based on an elastic-perfectly plastic body used in this study might give an unconservative estimate for the plastic collapse of a stainless steel pipe subjected to a pure tension load.

In addition, the potential is discussed for the simplification of structural integrity evaluation of multiple cracked piping. The integrity of the asymmetry multiple circumferential notched stainless steel pipes subjected to combined axial tension and bending can be evaluated conservatively using the theoretical plastic collapse strength for the pipe with multiple notches calculated based on the elastic-perfectly plastic model.

In this study, we investigated the photoluminescence (PL) properties of phosphorus- (P) and boron- (B) co-doped Si nanocrystals (Si NCs), which was synthesized using an ion implantation technique. The Si-NC size (average diameter: 3.5, 4.4, 5.2 nm) and the P and B ion doses (0.1-4.510 cm)values were systematically varied. We find that the PL peak energy shifts to lower values with increasing the average diameters of Si NCs and PB ion dose. The results of PL measurements indicate that the PL spectra are due to the band-to-band transition at the reduced Si-NC band gap caused by the formation of impurity and the radiative transitions between defect- and/or impurity-related localized states. It was found that the PL properties can be controlled by varying the Si-NC size as well as the dopant concentration.

In the clinical application of carbon-ion (C-ion) radiation therapy in Japan, different RBE values of carbons have been used for clinical and biological endpoints. The biological RBE (bRBE) was estimated by a method that is based on the linear-quadratic (LQ) model, and was defined at the 10% surviving fraction of human salivary gland (HSG) tumor cells. However, many of biological parameters, that is, type of tissues, different sort of cells, oxygenation levels, and all, could affect radiosensitivity. Thus, normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) cells were exposed to C-ion beams at Gunma University (10-80 keV/micrometer) and TIARA (108 and 158 keV/micrometer). The surviving fractions were analyzed with colony formation assays. The experimental RBE (eRBE) values were estimated from the radiation dose survival curve fitted by LQ model, and defined .

DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) induced by ionizing radiation pose a major threat to cell survival. The cell can respond to the presence of DSBs, through two major repair pathways: Homologous recombination (HR) and non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ). Higher levels of cell death are induced by high-LET radiation when compared to low-LET radiation, even at the same doses because of less effective or more inefficient DNA repair. In this study, we examine the effects of radiation with different LET values on DNA DSB repair and radiosensitivity. Wild-type cells and HR deficient (but NHEJ proficient) cells exhibited the high RBE values at LET values of 108 keV/ m. The RBE value for each cell type decreased with increasing LET values over 200 keV/m. Although NHEJ proficient cells had an almost constant SER value, NHEJ deficient cells showed a high SER value when compared to NHEJ proficient cells, even with increasing LET values.

Silk aerogel has been prepared from liquid silk, and the influences of the ray-irradiation on its mechanical property have been investigated. The formation of crosslinking structure in the sericin component by the ray-irradiation should induced the hardening of the silk aerogel.
