So far no standard procedure for the positron annihilation lifetime (PAL) technique has been established. A lack of the standards has led to difficulty in ensuring the equivalency and reliability of data from different laboratories. As a first, we conducted an interlaboratory comparison of PAL measurements for metal, polymer and silica glass with agreed procedures for data recording and analysis. The PAL data recorded at different laboratories were analyzed with a single lifetime component for the metal sample and with three components for the others, respectively. Based on the results of the reported positron and ortho-positronium lifetimes, the possible sources of the uncertainties in the PAL measurements are discussed. To reduce the effect of scattered $$gamma$$ rays, a lead shield was placed between the detectors. The uncertainty was significantly decreased, signifying that placing lead shields between the detectors effectively reduced the false signals due to the scattered $$gamma$$ rays.

Interlaboratory comparison of positron annihilation lifetime measurements using synthetic fused silica and polycarbonate was conducted with the participation of 12 laboratories. By regulating procedures for the measurement and data analysis the uncertainties of the positron lifetimes obtained at different laboratories were significantly reduced in comparison with those reported in the past.

The plant concept concerning the fuel cycle systems (combination of the reprocessing and the fuel fabrication )has been constructed to reduce their total cost by the introduction of various innovative techniques and to apply their utmost superior efficiency from such standpoints of a decrease in the environmental burden, better resource utilization and proliferation resistance improvement by the low decontamination transuranium element (TRU) recycle. For economical efficiency, less than 0.8 yen/kWh which is the demand value (total of the reprocessing expense and the fuel fabrication expense) of the fuel cycle expense satisfied each combination case at 200 tHM/y scale provisionally set for large-scale facilities. On the other hand, the combination case with a low breeder reactor core has satisfied the demand value, with improvement of the average burnup by the radial direction blanket fuel deletion contributing to the decrease of the fuel cycle expense at 50 tHM/y scale provisionally set for small-scale facilities.

Conceptual design on an integrated metal fuel recycle system

We have been performing the feasibility study on conceptual design for an integrated metallic fuel recycle plant of 38 tHM/y throughput. As a result of this study, the process concept was constructed, and the main equipment and devices were designed considering rationalixation,operationability, reduction of environmental impact and safety for the future commercialization. Furthermore, the image of the whole building included in cells was examined. In particular, the electrorefiner was enlarged from its current size and the cathode processor was improved from the current batch type to the continuation type to increase throughput. The plant was evaluated comprehensively. We confirmed that the major specifications for plant design would be satisfied. The economical cometitiveness of the plant has been evaluated.

Conceptual Design on Oxide Electrowinnig Method for FR Fuel Cycle

The oxide electrowinning method is one of the non-aqueous reprocessing methods, and the construction of a compact, economical plant is expected in the combination with this reprocessing method and the fuel fabrication method utilizing the vibro-compaction process. For this reprocessing method, the rational process flow has been constructed on the basis of the existing technical information, from the viewpoint of the improvement of the economical efficiency. The conceptual design study of the main equipment concept and the equipment layout in main process cells on the basis of this process flow has been carried out from the viewpoint of the safety and operability. Then the number of equipments in this system and floor space of the process cells concerned with the economical efficiency have also been evaluated. In result, it has been seen that the capital cost by the future plant conceptual design study would be improved compared with the previous design, accordingly with the diminution

An interlaboratory comparison for positron annihilation lifetime measurements for pure nickel, polycarbonate (PC) and fused silica was performed. Based on the reported data of positron (for nickel) and positronium (for PC and fused silica) components, the uncertainties in the PAL measurements were estimated and their possible source was discussed.

Recently, as a first step toward the standardization of the PAL technique, we conducted an interlaboratory comparison of PAL measurements for fused silica, polycarbonate and metal with agreed procedures for data recording and analysis. Based on the results of the reported lifetimes, possible sources of the uncertainties in the PAL measurements is probably caused by the backscattered $$gamma$$-rays by other detectors. We succeeded to show that inserting shields between detectors can reduce the uncertainty.
