Neutron diffraction study of the crystal and magnetic structures of antiferromagnetic manganese deuteride at high temperatures and high pressures

The crystal and magnetic structures of antiferromagnetic Mn deuterides formed by hydrogenating Mn metal at high temperature and high pressure, fcc $$gamma$$-MnDx and hcp $$epsilon$$-MnDx, were investigated by in-situ neutron powder diffraction. Deuterium atoms partially occupied the octahedral interstitial positions of the fcc and hcp metal lattices. The site occupancies increased rapidly with decreasing temperature from $$sim$$700 to $$sim$$450 K and remained down to 300 K. N$'{e}$el temperature of 543(10) K was determined for $$gamma$$-MnD$$_{0.34}$$. For $$epsilon$$-MnD$$_{0.62}$$, saturation magnetic moment and N$'{e}$el temperature were determined to be 0.82(1) $$mu_B$$ and 347(3) K, respectively. The N$'{e}$el temperatures determined for $$gamma$$-MnD$$_{0.34}$$ and $$epsilon$$-MnD$$_{0.62}$$ are consistent with those predicted by the respective Slater-Pauling curves proposed in previous studies. The updated N$'{e}$el temperatures provide insights into the development of more accurate Slater-Pauling curves based on electronic band structure calculations.

In our previous article (Nature Commun. 5, 5063 (2014)), the site occupancies of D atoms dissolved in an fcc Fe metal lattice were investigated via Rietveld refinement of neutron powder diffraction patterns collected at 988 K and 6.3 GPa. The fcc metal lattice has two interstitial sites available for accommodating D atoms: octahedral and tetrahedral sites. The Rietveld refinement revealed that D atoms occupied mainly the octahedral sites with occupancy of 0.532 and slightly the tetrahedral sites with occupancy of 0.056. Subsequent density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations by Antonov (Phys. Rev. Mater. 2019)) showed that the occupation energy on the tetrahedral site was significantly higher than that on the octahedral site; the tetrahedral site occupation was unlikely to occur even at temperatures as high as 988 K. We reexamined the site occupancies of D-atom by Rietveld refinement including extinction correction. As a result, the octahedral occupancy was increased to 0.60 and the tetrahedral occupancy was reduced to zero. The occupation of only the octahedral site for D atom is consistent with the DFT calculation, although in contrast to the previous results.

Effects of the low-oxygen gas-phase radiolysis on the corrosive environment in the liquid phase

Gamma-radiolysis experiments with gas-liquid coexistent samples were carried out to investigate effects of gas-phase radiolysis on corrosive environment for materials in solutions under irradiation. After gamma-ray irradiation, hydrogen peroxide, nitrate ion, nitrite ion were detected in the liquid phase. The production yields of nitrate ion and nitrite ion increased with increasing gas-phase volume and oxygen concentration. This result indicated that chemical reactions including oxygen and nitrogen in the gas phase were required for the production of nitrate ion and nitrite ion. To magnify the effects of gas-phase radiolysis in the gas-liquid coexistent samples, absorption dose rate in the liquid phase was reduced by one-hundredth using lead shield. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide and the pH in the shielded liquid phase were similar to those in the irradiated pure water, which did not contact with gas phase. This result indicated that the effects of nitrate ion and nitrite ion dissolved in the liquid phase on water radiolysis were not important in the current experimental system, in which the effects of gas-phase radiolysis were increased by 100-times.

Flerovium (Fl, element 114) is the heaviest element chemically studied so far. The first chemical experiment on Fl suggested that Fl is a noble-gas-like element, while the second studies suggested that Fl has a volatile-metal-like character. To obtain more reliable conclusion, we performed further experimental studies on Fl adsorption behavior on Si oxide and gold surfaces. The present results suggest that Fl is highly volatile and less reactive than the volatile metal, Hg, but has higher reactivity than the noble gas, Rn.

In this study, we compare the therapeutic effect between [$$^{211}$$At]NaAt and [$$^{131}$$I]NaI. In vitro analysis of double-stranded DNA break (DSB) and colony formation assay were performed using K1-NIS cells. [$$^{211}$$At]NaAt induced higher numbers of DSBs and had a reduced colony formation than [$$^{131}$$I]NaI. In K1-NIS mice, dose-dependent therapeutic effects were observed in both [$$^{211}$$At]NaAt and [$$^{131}$$I]NaI. The superior therapeutic effect of [$$^{211}$$At]NaAt suggests the promising clinical applicability of targeted alpha therapy using [$$^{211}$$At]NaAt in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer refractory to standard [$$^{131}$$I]NaI treatment.

The study of volatile superheavy element carbonyl complexes requires more efficient methods because the yield of transactinide elements decreases with increasing atomic number. This is achieved by using a newly developed double chamber system to separate the recoil chamber and the reaction one, thereby avoiding the decomposition of reactive molecules by the projectile ion beam, which hinders the synthesis of carbonyl complexes. The feasibility of this method was verified by synthesizing 5d metal short-lived isotopes as homologous element isotopes of the light transactinide elements Sg, Bh, Hs, and Mt at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency tandem accelerator and conducting model experiments.

Nihonium (Nh, element 113) and flerovium (Fl, element 114) are the first superheavy elements in which the 7p shell is occupied. High volatility and inertness were predicted for Fl due to the strong relativistic stabilization of the closed 7p$$_{1/2}$$ sub-shell, which originates from a large spin-orbit splitting between the 7p$$_{1/2}$$ and 7p$$_{3/2}$$ orbitals. One unpaired electron in the outermost 7p$$_{1/2}$$ sub-shell in Nh is expected to give rise to a higher chemical reactivity. Theoretical predictions of Nh reactivity are discussed, along with results of the first experimental attempts to study Nh chemistry in the gas phase. The experimental observations verify a higher chemical reactivity of Nh atoms compared to its neighbor Fl and call for the development of advanced setups. First tests of a newly developed detection device miniCOMPACT with highly reactive Fr isotopes assure that effective chemical studies of Nh are within reach.

We have developed ${it spatiotemporal}$ measurement and analysis techniques in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To begin with, time-division depth profiles of gate stacked film interfaces have been achieved by NAP-HARPES (Near Ambient Pressure Hard X-ray Angle-Resolved Photo Emission Spectroscopy) data. We then have promoted our methods to quickly perform peak fittings and depth profiling from time-division ARPES data, which enables us to realize 4D-XPS analysis. It is found that the traditional maximum entropy method (MEM) combined with Jackknife averaging of sparse modeling in NAP-HARPES data is effective to perform dynamic measurement of depth profiles with high precision.

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a radiotherapy for the treatment of intractable cancer. In BNCT precise determination of $$^{10}$$B concentration in whole blood sample before neutron irradiation is crucial for control of the neutron irradiation time and the neutron dosimetry. We have applied the Charged Particle Activation Analysis (CPAA) to non-destructive and accurate determination of $$^{10}$$B concentration in whole blood sample. The experiment was performed at JAEA Tandem Accelerator using an 8 MeV proton beam. The 478 keV $$gamma$$ ray of $$^{7}$$Be produced in the $$^{10}$$B(p,$$alpha$$)$$^{7}$$Be reaction was used to quantify the $$^{10}$$B, and $$gamma$$ rays of $$^{56}$$Co originating from the reaction with Fe in blood was used to normalize the $$gamma$$-ray intensity. The results demonstrated that the present CPAA method can be applied to the determination of the $$^{10}$$B concentration in the blood sample.

Neutron diffraction study on the deuterium composition of nickel deuteride at high temperatures and high pressures

The site occupancy of deuterium (D) atoms in face-centered-cubic nickel (fcc Ni) was measured along a cooling path from 1073 to 300 K at an initial pressure of 3.36 GPa via in situ neutron powder diffraction. Deuterium atoms predominantly occupy the octahedral (O) sites and slightly occupy the tetrahedral (T) sites of the fcc metal lattice. The O-site occupancy increases from 0.4 to 0.85 as the temperature is lowered from 1073 to 300 K. Meanwhile, the T-site occupancy remains c.a. 0.02. The temperature-independent behavior of the T-site occupancy is unusual, and its process is not yet understood. From the linear relation between the expanded lattice volume and D content, a D-induced volume expansion of 2.09(13) ${AA $^{3}$/D}$ atom was obtained. This value is in agreement with the values of 2.14-2.2 ${AA $^{3}$/D}$ atom previously reported for Ni and Ni$$_{0.8}$$ Fe$$_{0.2}$$ alloy.

Neutron powder diffraction profiles were collected for iron deuteride (FeDx) while the temperature decreased from 1023 to 300 K for a pressure range of 4-6 GPa. The $$varepsilon$$' deuteride with a double hexagonal close-packed (dhcp) structure, which coexisted with other stable or metastable deutrides at each temperature and pressure condition, formed solid solutions with a composition of FeD$$_{0.68(1)}$$ at 673 K and 6.1 GPa and FeD$$_{0.74(1)}$$ at 603 K and 4.8 GPa. Upon stepwise cooling to 300 K, the D-content x increased to a stoichiometric value of 1.0 to form monodeuteride FeD$$_{1.0}$$. In the dhcp FeD$$_{1.0}$$ at 300 K and 4.2 GPa, dissolved D atoms fully occupied the octahedral interstitial sites, slightly displaced from the octahedral centers in the dhcp metal lattice, and the dhcp sequence of close-packed Fe planes contained hcp-stacking faults at 12%. Magnetic moments with 2.11 $$pm$$ 0.06 B/Fe-atom aligned ferromagnetically in parallel on the Fe planes.

Measurement of the angular distribution of $$gamma$$-rays after neutron capture by $$^{139}$$La for a T-violation search

Parity violating effects enhanced by up to 10$$^6$$ times have been observed in several neutron induced compound nuclei. There is a theoretical prediction that time reversal (T) violating effects can also be enhanced in these nuclei implying that T-violation can be searched for by making very sensitive measurements. However, the enhancement factor has not yet been measured in all nuclei. The angular distribution of the (n,$$gamma$$) reaction was measured with $$^{139}$$La by using a germanium detector assembly at J-PARC, and the enhancement factor was obtained. From the result, the measurement time to achieve the most sensitive T-violation search was estimated as 1.4 days, and a 40% polarized $$^{139}$$La target and a 70% polarized $$^3$$He spin filter whose thickness is 70 atm$$cdot$$cm are needed. Therefore high quality $$^3$$He spin filter is developed in JAEA. The measurement result of the (n,$$gamma$$) reaction at J-PARC and the development status of the $$^3$$He spin filter will be presented.

Hexagonal close-packed iron hydride, hcp FeHx, is absent from the conventional phase diagram of the Fe-H system, although hcp metallic Fe exists stably over extensive temperature ($$T$$) and pressure ($$P$$) conditions, including those corresponding to the Earth's inner core. ${{it In situ}}$ X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements at temperatures ranging from 298 to 1073 K and H pressures ranging from 4 to 7 GPa revealed that the hcp hydride was formed for FeH$$_{x}$$ compositions when $$x < 0.6$$. Hydrogen atoms occupied the octahedral interstitial sites of the host metal lattice both partially and randomly. The hcp hydride exhibited a H-induced volume expansion of 2.48(5) $AA $^{3}$$/H-atom, which was larger than that of the face-centered cubic (fcc) hydride. The hcp hydride showed an increase in $$x$$ with $$T$$, whereas the fcc hydride showed a corresponding decrease. The present study provides guidance for further investigations of the Fe-H system over an extensive $$x$$-$$T$$-$$P$$ region.
